Police: Young Boy Brutally Tortured by His Mother and Her Girlfriend
Child abuse suspects: Starkeisha Brown and Krystal Matthews. Child Torture Suspects
South Los Angeles (myfoxla.com) -- A 5-year-old boy remains hospitalized after suffering extreme physical and psychological abuse, and police Friday sought the public's help locating the boy's 24-year-old mother and her 19-year-old live-in girlfriend in connection with the torture.
In a case veteran officers have called one of the worst cases of child abuse ever investigated, parolee-at-large Starkeisha Brown and Krystal Matthews apparently beat Brown's son routinely, inflicted multiple cigarette burns on his genital area and other body parts and left him to sit in his own urine, Los Angeles Police Department First Assistant Chief James McDonnell said.
The child was subjected to the unbearable abuse for an extended period of time and was hospitalized Monday. His condition remains "guarded," McDonnell said.
"I just looked at the photographs that were taken of this victim, and in my time (with the police department) I have never seen anybody with these kind of injuries that has lived," McDonnell said."This kid must have a tremendous will to live to be able to still hang on despite what he's been through."
The abuse the boy suffered included being denied basic necessities like food and water and being suspended with his hands above his head to a door and beaten, McDonnell said.
The child had a broken tooth with a nerve exposed and was regularly forced to place his hands on a hot stove, McDonnell said.
"Because of the burns and scar tissue, he can't fully open his hands," McDonnell said.
Police found out about the extensive abuse at an initial appointment with the Department of Children Services during which Brown and Matthews brought in a healthy child and tried to pass that child off as the victim, McDonnell said.
"Thankfully we were later able to locate our victim who had been left abandoned with an unrelated stranger," McDonnell said.
Police had no information on the boy's father, and it was unknown if the child had any other relatives.
Asked how something like this could happen, McDonnell said, "We have tests and licenses for everything in life except parenting."
Pleading for the public's assistance, McDonnell said the victim is the only child involved in this case, but it was unknown if Brown and Matthews had access to other children.
"Anyone who would commit these crimes against a helpless child needs to be behind bars as soon as possible," McDonnell said.
Brown, described as 5 feet 8 inches tall weighing 140 pounds, and Matthews, 5 feet 6 inches tall weighing 140 pounds, both have a history of violence and should not be approached by members of the public. It was unknown why Brown was on parole. At least one of the women may have ties to a gang.
